2006 State Open Singles Conclude
March, 2006. Four of the five championship matches went to five games, with the
players and crowds getting their money’s worth. Jay Hatcher went out
to a strong 2-0 lead, but then Ron Turnier turned the momentum and came
on strong to win.
Mark Robinson came from 2 games down to tie it up 2-2,
and 5-5 all in the fifth before the veteran player Noel Clayton took him.
Michael Jones came back from going down 9-2 in the first game, to make it
a very competitive match. Both players were exhausted after their
grueling match. Kent Westberry took an early 2-0 lead against Osman Shariff,
before Osman started his comeback. Unfortunately Kent had to pull out in
the 4th game, and asked Osman (who’s in med school) to operate on Kent’s “bum”
knee in 5 years to help his squash game. Jim Walker and Brian Puryear had another toe to toe battle in the trenches, with Jim Walker finishing strong. It was Brian’s 4th match in 24 hours! You squash players burned a lot of carbs this weekend. Congratulations to all participants.

As of January 2006, Jonathon Power, the 31-year-old from Montreal,
is the Dunlop PSA Men's World #1. Jonathan was in Louisville on the
26th of January, 2006, to play an exhibition match against Amr Shabana,
the current World Open Champion and PSA Men's World #2 (Power won 3-1). These great
ambassadors of squash put on an amazing display of skill and fitness that kept the
crowd of 80 flabbergasted! After the match Amr and Jonathan answered some questions about squash
and their involvement in the sport. These guys are welcome here anytime!
