2003 Creation Gardens River City Championship
Dear Squashers,Fifteen players participanted in the River City Squash Tournament from Thursday, June 13 to Saturday, June 15.The Tournament results are attached in a Microsoft Spreadsheet format.We were delighted to have Eugene Gholz and Johann Dorfling travel here both Friday night and Saturday morning from Lexington to compete, and help with refereeing. Thanks to Hamad for encouraging them as well.The format was a handicapped tournament, and as usual, Muhammad Waseem did a nice job of handicapping the event with players starting with handicaps ranging from -4 to +6. The stronger players were still able to overcome their handicaps to win.Eugene Gholz lost in a spirited first round match to his ex Lexington compadre Hamad Bokhari Friday night. Then Hamad had to take on Johann the same night, but his reserve tank ran out of gas, and Johann bested Hamad."Zeb" Haq defeated Jim Martin 9-7,9-7, 2-9, 9-4 in one semifinals Saturday morning; Zeb started with a - 4 handicap, while yours truly started with a +4 handicap. It was a lot of fun. Johann overcame his handicap to beat Brian Puryear in the other semi, to advance to the finals.The finals saw Zeb play his second match Saturday morning, in a closely contested match with Johann. Johann had a bit of a slow start, but then found his range and had a lot of closely contested long points. The fans certainly enjoyed watching.Thanks again to everyone for participating.
